How to apply for the Care Dependency Grant

1. Get your documents ready

• Your ID
• The child's birth certificate
• The child's medical records
• Proof of income (not needed for foster parents)
• Foster care court order, if applicable

2. Follow these steps

1. 1Get a medical assessment referral from SASSA for the child.
2. 2Take the child to the medical assessment.
3. 3Tell the officer which grant you are applying for and hand over your documents.
4. 4Complete the forms with the SASSA officer. Ask them to explain anything you do not understand.
5. 5Choose how you want to be paid. If using a bank account, it must be in your own name.
6. 6Keep the receipt with your reference number. Approval can take up to three months.
