SASSA has an alternative process using affidavits and other documents. Ask at your nearest office and apply for your ID at Home Affairs at the same time.

If you are too old or sick to visit an office, a family member or friend can ask SASSA about a home visit or apply on your behalf with a letter from you and a doctor's note.

It can take up to three months. If approved, you are paid from the date you applied.

SASSA must tell you why in writing. You can ask SASSA to reconsider, and then appeal to the Minister of Social Development within 90 days.

Common reasons include a change in income, not collecting for three months in a row, an expired temporary grant or court order, or being admitted to a state institution.

You cannot get two grants for yourself, but you can get your own grant plus grants for children in your care.
