Child Support Grant

Who this grant is for

The primary caregiver of a child under 18. You do not have to be the parent, but you must be the person mainly looking after the child's daily needs.

Main requirements (check with SASSA)

• Caregiver and child live in South Africa
• Caregiver is a citizen, permanent resident or recognised refugee
• Caregiver is older than 16
• Caregiver (and spouse) pass the means test
• Child is not cared for in a state institution
• Usually no more than six non-biological children per caregiver

What to bring

• Your ID and the child's birth certificate
• Proof you are the primary caregiver if you are not the parent (e.g. affidavit or social worker report)
• Proof of income, if any
• School attendance details for school-going children, if requested

If documents are missing

SASSA has an alternative process using affidavits. Ask at the office – do not give up because a document is missing.

How much is it?

Up to R580 per month from April 2026, according to the official 2026/27 announcement. The amount you receive can be lower after the means test. Amounts can change – check SASSA before relying on them.
