How to apply for the Older Persons Grant

1. Get your documents ready

• 13-digit barcoded ID or smart ID card
• Proof of income and assets (e.g. payslip, pension letter, bank statements)
• Marriage certificate, divorce order or spouse's death certificate, if it applies
• Your own bank account details, if you want bank payment

2. Follow these steps

1. 1Go to your nearest SASSA office (or check the official site for online options). Applying is free.
2. 2Tell the officer which grant you are applying for and hand over your documents.
3. 3Complete the forms with the SASSA officer. Ask them to explain anything you do not understand.
4. 4Choose how you want to be paid. If using a bank account, it must be in your own name.
5. 5Keep the receipt with your reference number. Approval can take up to three months.
