Older Persons Grant

Who this grant is for

People aged 60 or older who live in South Africa and whose income and assets are low enough to pass SASSA's means test.

Main requirements (check with SASSA)

• South African citizen, permanent resident or recognised refugee
• Living in South Africa
• 60 years or older
• You (and your spouse, if married) pass the means test
• Not cared for in a state institution
• Not receiving another social grant for yourself

How to apply

1. Visit your nearest SASSA office (or ask about online options on the official site).
2. Bring your 13-digit barcoded ID or smart ID card.
3. Bring proof of income, assets and marital status (e.g. marriage certificate, divorce order or spouse's death certificate).
4. Complete the application with a SASSA officer. It is free.
5. Keep your receipt – it has your reference number.

Good to know

• Applying costs nothing. Never pay anyone to "help" you apply.
• Current monthly amounts change every year – confirm on the official SASSA site.

How much is it?

Up to R2 400 per month from April 2026, according to the official 2026/27 announcement. The amount you receive can be lower after the means test. Amounts can change – check SASSA before relying on them.
