Disability Grant

Who this grant is for

Adults aged 18–59 who cannot support themselves through work because of a disability.

Main requirements (check with SASSA)

• Citizen, permanent resident or recognised refugee, living in South Africa
• Aged 18 to 59
• A medical assessment confirming the disability, not older than 3 months
• You (and spouse) pass the means test
• Not in a state institution and not receiving another grant for yourself

How it works

1. Go to SASSA to get a referral for a medical assessment.
2. Attend the assessment with a SASSA-appointed doctor.
3. Complete your application with your ID, medical records and proof of income.
4. The grant can be temporary (6–12 months) or permanent.

Good to know

At age 60 the Disability Grant changes to the Older Persons Grant automatically.

How much is it?

Up to R2 400 per month from April 2026, according to the official 2026/27 announcement. The amount you receive can be lower after the means test. Amounts can change – check SASSA before relying on them.
